Cheesy Yam Balls are a delicious appetizer made from mashed yam and cheese, inspired by the classic croquette. These crispy golden balls have a soft, cheesy center that’s perfect for impressing guests at holiday events or special gatherings. With a hint of suya spice for a Nigerian twist, these yam balls are flavorful and super easy to make.
Prepare the Yam:Wash and peel the yam slices. Boil them in water until they are soft and tender (about 20-25 minutes).Once cooked, drain and mash the yam in a bowl while still hot. Add butter, seasoning cubes, black pepper, and chopped parsley (if using). Mash until smooth and well combined.
3 slices of yam, 2 tablespoons butter, 1-2 seasoning cubes, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 sprig parsley
Prepare the Coating:In a separate bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with suya spice and set aside.Whisk the eggs in another bowl and set aside.
2 cups breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon suya spice, 2 eggs
Form the Yam Balls:Scoop a small amount of the mashed yam into your hand and flatten it. Place a piece of cheddar cheese in the center and wrap the yam around it to form a ball.Repeat this process until all the yam mixture is used.
1 cup chopped cheddar cheese
Coat the Yam Balls:Dip each yam ball into the whisked eggs, then roll it in the seasoned breadcrumbs, making sure it is evenly coated.
Fry the Yam Balls:Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, fry the yam balls in batches until golden brown and crispy on all sides (about 3-4 minutes).Remove from oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Notes
Customize the filling: You can add shredded bacon, beef bits, or other fillings along with the cheese for an extra savory twist.
Seasoning: Feel free to adjust the seasoning cubes, suya spice, and black pepper to suit your taste.
Baking Option: If you prefer a healthier option, you can bake the yam balls at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden brown.
