Equipment

Ingredients

For the Puff Puff:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup pumpkin puree
  • teaspoons active dry yeast about 1 sachet
  • ½ teaspoon dry cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Oil for deep frying

For the Pumpkin Spice Sugar:

  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, dissolve 1 teaspoon of sugar in 1 cup of warm water (110°F-115°F). Stir in the active dry yeast and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, cayenne pepper, freshly grated nutmeg, and salt.
  • Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Pour the activated yeast mixture and pumpkin puree into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir until the batter is smooth and resembles a thick cake batter. If needed, add more water a little at a time (up to ¾ cup) until the desired consistency is achieved.
  • Let the Batter Rise:
Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and place it in a warm spot. Allow the batter to rise for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Heat the Oil:
Heat the oil in a deep frying pan or pot to 350°F-355°F (175°C-180°C). The oil should be deep enough for the puff puff to float while frying.
  • Fry the Puff Puff:
Using an ice cream scoop or your hands, carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry on medium-low heat to prevent burning, turning occasionally until all sides are golden brown. Each batch should take about 5 minutes to cook.
  • Drain and Serve:
Remove the puff puff using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • Add Pumpkin Spice Sugar:
For an extra kick of flavor, whisk together the powdered sugar and pumpkin pie spice. Sprinkle this mixture over the warm puff puff before serving.

Notes

  • 🌶️ Adjust the cayenne pepper to your spice preference for a milder or spicier puff puff.
  • 🎃 Pumpkin puree not only adds flavor but also makes the puff puff extra moist.
These Nigerian Pumpkin Puff Puffs with a touch of pepper offer a delightful balance of sweetness and spice, perfect for any gathering or as a satisfying snack!
