South African Pumpkin Bredie
This hearty Lamb and Pumpkin Stew combines tender lamb with sweet pumpkin, warm spices, and a hint of citrus, creating a rich and comforting dish perfect for cooler days. 🍂🍲
Equipment
- Deep skillet or large pot
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 4 pounds stewing lamb or mutton cut into bite-sized pieces
- 4 onions sliced
- 1 chili pepper finely chopped (seeded if desired)
- 1 cup water
- 6 cups diced raw pumpkin
- 1 pinch ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 piece 2-inch orange peel
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Brown the Lamb: Heat the oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add the lamb pieces and cook, stirring frequently, until evenly browned. Remove the lamb from the skillet and set aside.
- Cook the Aromatics: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and chopped chili pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and translucent.
- Combine Ingredients: Return the browned lamb to the skillet. Stir in the water, diced pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, bay leaf, orange peel, salt, and pepper. Mix everything well.
- Simmer the Stew: Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Cover and cook for about 1 hour, or until the lamb is tender. If using mutton, allow it to cook for 2-3 hours, or until tender.
- Serve: Remove the bay leaf and orange peel before serving. Enjoy the stew hot with a side of rice or your favorite grain.
Notes
- 🍊 The orange peel adds a subtle citrusy note—adjust to taste or omit if preferred.
- 🐑 Mutton requires a longer cooking time, but it will reward you with a deeply rich and flavorful dish.
