Spicy Fried Plantains (Kelewele) – Ghana Style Recipe
Spicy Fried Plantains (Kelewele) – Ghana Style Recipe
Kelewele is a delicious Ghanaian street food made from ripe plantains seasoned with a mix of spices and fried to perfection. The plantains are slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and packed with flavors from ginger, garlic, onions, and hot pepper. This is a perfect snack or side dish often enjoyed with peanuts.
Ingredients
- 3 ripe plantains
- 1 red scotch bonnet pepper
- 1/2 onion bulb
- 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
- 2 small garlic cloves
- 1 tsp ground cloves
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Plantains:Peel the ripe plantains and place them on a cutting board. Slice the plantains into quarters lengthwise, then cut them into bite-sized pieces. To add a decorative touch, cut them at an angle.
- Make the Spice Blend:In a blender, combine the red scotch bonnet pepper, onion, ginger, garlic, and a little water. Blend until a smooth puree is formed.
- Season the Plantains:In a mixing bowl, combine the plantain pieces with the blended spice mix. Add the ground cloves and a pinch of salt. Stir well to ensure that all the plantain pieces are evenly coated with the spices.
- Heat the Oil:Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Ensure that the oil is hot enough for frying by testing a small piece of plantain – it should sizzle upon contact.
- Fry the Plantains:Gently place the seasoned plantain pieces into the hot oil. Fry for about 3 to 4 minutes, turning them halfway through to ensure even browning on all sides.
- Drain the Plantains:Once golden brown and crispy, remove the plantains from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess oil.
- Serve and Enjoy:Serve your Kelewele hot with a side of roasted peanuts or peanut butter for dipping, or enjoy it on its own as a flavorful snack.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of scotch bonnet pepper to suit your spice tolerance.
- You can experiment with additional spices such as nutmeg or cayenne pepper to enhance the flavor.
- For an even crunchier texture, ensure the plantains are fully ripe but not overripe.
