Tunisian Grilled Salad Tuna
Tunisian Grilled Salad Tuna
This Tunisian grilled salad combines smoky charred peppers, tomatoes, onions, and garlic, blended into a flavorful chunky mixture. Topped with flaked tuna, hard-boiled eggs, and garnished with olives, it’s a refreshing side dish or appetizer.
Equipment
- Grill or stovetop
- Food processor (optional)
- Knife and chopping board
Ingredients
Vegetables:
- 3 green bell peppers
- 3 red Fresno peppers or any chili pepper
- 2 tomatoes
- 1 onion peeled and quartered, stems left on to keep intact
- 3 cloves garlic
- 1 tsp caraway seeds optional
Garnishes:
- Olive oil for drizzling
- Juice from 1 lemon
- 1 handful of black olives
- 1-2 cans of tuna drained
- 2-3 hard-boiled eggs for serving
Instructions
- Grill the vegetables: Preheat a grill over medium heat. Grill the tomatoes, bell peppers, chili peppers, and onion until they are charred and cooked through. Remove each vegetable as it’s ready. The onions will take the longest, so be patient. This process should take between 15-30 minutes.
- Prepare the garlic mixture: In a small bowl, mash together the garlic, caraway seeds, and a pinch of salt until it forms a smooth paste.
- Chop the grilled vegetables: Peel the charred skin from the grilled vegetables and roughly chop them. Add the chopped vegetables to a food processor.
- Blend the salad: Pulse the grilled vegetables in the food processor until they are combined into a chunky mixture. Stir in the garlic mixture and season with salt to taste.
- Chill and serve: Refrigerate the salad for about 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld. Before serving, squeeze fresh lemon juice over the salad and drizzle generously with olive oil.
- Garnish: Top with flaked tuna, hard-boiled eggs, and olives. Serve with lemon wedges on the side.
Notes
- Adjust heat: You can modify the spiciness by choosing milder or spicier peppers according to your taste.
- Garlic intensity: Add the garlic mixture gradually to control the intensity, as it can be very strong.
- Make ahead: This salad can be made a day in advance and stored in the fridge, allowing the flavors to deepen.
