Founded in 2010 by entrepreneur and philanthropist Tony O. Elumelu, the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) champions African entrepreneurship as a catalyst for social and economic development. Guided by Elumelu’s Africapitalism philosophy, TEF invests long-term in the continent’s private sector—especially small and growing businesses. In 2015, TEF consolidated its programs and launched the flagship Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme, providing robust support to Africa’s next generation of entrepreneurs. The Foundation helps them overcome obstacles as they scale their businesses from start-ups to SMEs and eventually multinationals. An active alumni network benefits from ongoing mentorship, networking, and partnership opportunities. TEF’s integrated approach includes promoting entrepreneurship (Elumelu Professionals’ Programme, Nigeria 50, Impact Investments), enhancing competitiveness (National Competitiveness Council of Nigeria), selective grant making (Kofi Annan Foundation, John Kufor Foundation, among others), leadership development (Tony & Awele Elumelu Prize), and policy advocacy (Africapitalism Institute). Through these efforts, TEF continues to build a vibrant and impactful pan-African entrepreneurial ecosystem.
