Africa's Medal Table at The Commonwealth Games 2022

The Commonwealth games 2022 has come to an end. Held in Birmingham, England, the game successfully displayed humanity, quality, and destiny. Out of the 72 Commonwealth nations that took part in the over 283 events in 20 sports, here is a rundown of how African countries performed on the medal table.

#1. Nigeria

Dubbed the giant of Africa, Nigeria lived up to its name at the Commonwealth games 2022. The country finished 7th on the overall medal table with 12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze medals.

Although Nigeria finished 7th, they were the top-ranked nation in Africa. In total, Nigeria won 35 medals. Nigerian athletes Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume have also made their country proud by beating world records.

#2. South Africa

South Africa is not a first-timer when it comes to the Commonwealth games. The country has always put on a solid performance. South Africa raked in 7 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze, earning a total of 27 medals. With this tally, South Africa finished 9th on the medal table.

#3. Kenya

Kenyan athletes are famous for their endurance in the marathon and long-distance races. They reestablished this fact at the Commonwealth games 2022. The country raked in 21 medals in total.

All of this came in the athletics and para-athletics categories except for Helen Wawira Kariuki’s bronze win in the Para Powerlifting category. Kenya ended the game with 6 gold, 5 silver, and ten bronze medals. 

#4. Uganda

Uganda had a total of five medals with 3 gold and 2 bronze medals. With this tally, Uganda ended 16th in the Commonwealth games 2022 medal table. The country had a slightly similar performance in 2018 when they won 3 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze. Even though they are far below Kenya in terms of medals tally, the Ugandan athletes were an amazing team to watch.  

#5. Cameroon

Cameroon one medal each in the three medal categories. Berthe Etane Ngolle snatched bronze in wrestling, Arlette Mawe Fokoa earned silver in athletics, and Junior Ngadja Nyabeyeu made his team proud by securing gold in weightlifting.

The team may have ended up with only three wins but it was super excited since it didn’t win any gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth games. Cameroon ended 20th on the overall medal table.

#6. Zambia

Zambia tied with Cameroon for the 20th spot. They also ended the tournament with 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal. The 19-year-old Muzala Samukonga was the country’s sensation as he won the country’s only gold medal at the Commonwealth games 2022.

#7. Mauritius

Like team Cameroon and Uganda, team Mauritius earned a total of five medals at the just concluded games. This included 3 silver and 2 bronze. Unfortunately, the team did not secure any gold medals.

They ended up 27th on the overall medals list. Their performance in the Commonwealth games 2022 shows their determination to do better. They only managed one silver medal in the last Commonwealth game held in 2018.

#8. Ghana

Team Ghana earned 2 silver, and 3 bronze to beat their record of 1 bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth games. Both silver medals were won by Abraham Mensah and Joseph Commey in the boxing category.

Abdul Omah also won a bronze medal in the boxing category while Deborah Acquah and Joseph Amoah secured their bronze win in the athletics category. Ghana finished 28th in global ranking but is 8th in Africa. 

#9. Mozambique

Team Mozambique made their presence felt at the Commonwealth games 2022 by bagging 2 silver and 1 bronze medal. The team staged a brilliant performance to nullify 2018’s zero medal outing, thanks to the performance of Tiago Munxanga, Rady Gramane, and Alcinda Panguane all in the boxing category. The team ranked 30th on the overall medal table. 

#10. Tanzania

Tanzania ended the Commonwealth games 2022 with 1 silver and 2 bronze. Alphonce Simbu won the silver medal in the athletics category while Yusuf Changalawe and Kassim Mbundwike both took home bronze in the boxing category.

Tanzania ranked 32nd on the general medal table but comes it at number 10 on the African medal table. Their performance in the year’s event is worth celebrating as they were unable to secure any medals in the 2018 Commonwealth games. 

#11. Botswana

Botswana comes in at number 33 on the Commonwealth games 2022 overall medal table. However, the Southern-African country ranks 11th on the African medal table. The team won 1 silver and 1 bronze medal in the athletics and boxing categories respectively.

The bronze medal came from Lethabo Modukanele while the silver medal was awarded to the Men’s 4×400 relay team comprising Lungo Scotch, Zibane Ngozi, Bayapo Ndori, and Anthony Pesela. 

#12. The Gambia

Team Gambia ended the campaign at the 35th position in the Commonwealth games 2022. The country was able to secure its only silver medal through Faye Njie who performed well in Judo.

While the Gambia did not perform as much as other African countries, its silver medal is positive progress compared to the zero medal in the 2018 Commonwealth games. 

#13. Namibia

Namibia is the last African country on the overall medal table. It ranked 39th overall. Team Namibia earned more medals each than Cameroon, Mozambique, Tanzania, Botswana, and the Gambia. Unfortunately, all of its 4 medals were bronze.

Helalia Johannes, Ananias Shikongo, and Christine Mboma all won in the athletics category. Alex Miller won bronze in the cycling category. The team’s performance in the 2018 Commonwealth games was slightly better as they were able to secure 2 silver medals. 

Conclusion

The Commonwealth games 2022 has seen Team Australia outperform others by winning 67 gold, 57 silver, and 64 bronze medals. Nevertheless, African countries equally performed brilliantly.

Team Nigeria tops the African medal table with 12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze. There are also 11 other African winners. Together, all the African teams brought back 32 gold, 36 silver, and 52 bronze medals.
