Africa has its first handheld tablet to rival the iPad and similar western inventions, which went on sale in the Republic of Congo on Monday, its inventor Verone Mankou said Monday.

“We have set up a team and logistics to sell the tablet since Friday. Today, anyone can buy one,” if they are in the main cities of the capital Brazzaville and the oil port of Pointe-Noire, the 26-year-old told AFP.

The tablet is called the Way-C — “the light of the stars” in a dialect of northern Congo. It measures 19 x 17 x 1.2 centimetres and weighs 380 grammes and has integrated Wi-Fi circuitry and a 4.0 GB memory.

On the eve of the 2012 African Cup of Nations, 25 footballers including Seydou Keita from Mali, Demba Ba from Senegal, Charles Kabore from Burkina Faso, and Lawali Idrissa from Niger, have spoken out in solidarity with millions of people facing hunger across their region.

They are appealing to the international community to work together so that “We CAN win the match against hunger”.

In the face of an emerging food crisis in West Africa, Mali and Barcelona star Seydou Keita said: “If we act now we could save the lives of women and children who are always the first victims of food crises.

An increasing number of African countries are beginning to step away from aid dependency, as the domestic private sector becomes the engine of growth across much of Africa.

Currently, at least a third of African countries receive aid that is equivalent to less than 10 percent of their tax revenue. They include Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Libya. This is a significant change from years of high dependency on aid.

These are countries that have made the most progress towards replacing aid with domestically mobilised resources. On average, Africa has managed to raise an estimated 441 dollars in taxes per person per year while receiving 41 dollars per person per year in aid, according to a comprehensive look at African resource mobilisation by the African Economic Outlook 2011.

Three of former president Nelson Mandela’s grandchildren are to star in a new reality show, a member of the family announced on Thursday.

“The show will be about our lives as young, black women… We’re not wearing ‘I’m a Mandela’ T-shirts,” Swati Dlamini, granddaughter of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, told reporters in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Said her cousin Dorothy Adjoa Amuah, granddaughter of the late Evelyn Mandela: “We are exposing Africa for what it is… with a new middle class of intellectuals… contributing to the economy.”

Dlamini, Amuah and Swati’s older sister Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway, grew up in the United States, but returned to South Africa for business and family reasons.

The show would take an unscripted look at the role of the new generation of women as mothers and career women.

“We’re definitely not the African Kardashians [three US reality stars],” Amuah said.

Tomorrow, October 1st, American Airlines will debut two new lines of food “developed” by the company’s new celebrity chef partners, Marcus Samuelsson of New York’s Red Rooster and Richard Sandoval of Pampano and others.

Samuelsson’s dishes, which are being called the “New American Table” menu, after his cookbook, will be sold on domestic flights.

Late on Sunday night, Wangari Maathai – the fearless campaigner, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, the politician, the Tree Lady, and the first ever female PhD holder from East and Central Africa – died in a Nairobi hospital bed after a long fight with cancer. She was 71, and one of the most remarkable women of her generation. Despite a lifetime of activism and achievement, it was only in 2004 that the world was introduced to Wangari Maathai. It was then the Kenyan was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace; an award that was all about Maathai’s simple and far-sighted solution to deforestation and desertification in her country.
