Nelson Mandela’s 3 grand daughters to star in a new reality show

Three of former president Nelson Mandela’s grandchildren are to star in a new reality show, a member of the family announced on Thursday.

“The show will be about our lives as young, black women… We’re not wearing ‘I’m a Mandela’ T-shirts,” Swati Dlamini, granddaughter of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, told reporters in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Said her cousin Dorothy Adjoa Amuah, granddaughter of the late Evelyn Mandela: “We are exposing Africa for what it is… with a new middle class of intellectuals… contributing to the economy.”

Dlamini, Amuah and Swati’s older sister Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway, grew up in the United States, but returned to South Africa for business and family reasons.

The show would take an unscripted look at the role of the new generation of women as mothers and career women.

“We’re definitely not the African Kardashians [three US reality stars],” Amuah said.

Celebrity chefs have already conquered land and sea. But now they’re going airborne. Tomorrow, October 1st, American Airlines will debut two new lines of food “developed” by the company’s new celebrity chef partners, Marcus Samuelsson of New York’s Red Rooster and Richard Sandoval of Pampano and others.

Samuelsson’s dishes, which are being called the “New American Table” menu, after his cookbook, will be sold on domestic flights.

Activist and Nobel Peace Laureate, Wangar Maathai dies a age 71

Late on Sunday night, Wangari Maathai – the fearless campaigner, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, the politician, the Tree Lady, and the first ever female PhD holder from East and Central Africa – died in a Nairobi hospital bed after a long fight with cancer. She was 71, and one of the most remarkable women of her generation. Despite a lifetime of activism and achievement, it was only in 2004 that the world was introduced to Wangari Maathai. It was then the Kenyan was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace; an award that was all about Maathai’s simple and far-sighted solution to deforestation and desertification in her country.

“It was incredibly glamorous and fantastic. I don’t think I’ll experience something like that again in my lifetime,” Theron told The Hollywood Reporter.

Smart Water has just gotten cooler with suave and sexy new face, Idris Elba. The Ghanaian Brit Actor is featured in print Ads for the water brand which is owned by Coca Cola, looking dapper as ever. The Ads will run in GQ, Essence and Men’s Journal Magazines.

The fall campaign ads were shot earlier this summer by noted fashion photographer Norman Jean Ray and feature Elba in different scenes incorporating Smart Water into his daily lifestyle.

Idris takes over from Jennifer Aniston as the face of the water brand which is enhanced with electrolytes. The stunning Hollywood actress showed off her enviably athletic frame in last year’s adverts.

NOVOZAVIDOVO, Russia — People in this Russian town used to stare at Jean Gregoire Sagbo because they had never seen a black man. Now they say they see in him something equally rare – an honest politician.

Sagbo last month became the first black to be elected to office in Russia.

In a country where racism is entrenched and often violent, Sagbo’s election as one of Novozavidovo’s 10 municipal councilors is a milestone. But among the town’s 10,000 people, the 48-year-old from the West African country of Benin is viewed simply a Russian who cares about his hometown.

He promises to revive the impoverished, garbage-strewn town where he has lived for 21 years and raised a family. His plans include reducing rampant drug addiction, cleaning up a polluted lake and delivering heating to homes.

“Novozavidovo is dying,” Sagbo said in an interview in the ramshackle municipal building. “This is my home, my town. We can’t live like this.” [READ MORE ...]

Also on the list is Ethiopian super model Liya Kebede who was appointed as World Health Organization’s Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in 2005. This year, in recognition of her work in this field, the World Economic Forum named her a Young Global Leader.
