African Vibes Magazine Fans remember the King of Pop

Michael Jackson was pronounced dead on 25th June 09 after paramedics found him in a coma following a panic-stricken phone call from the superstar’s Los Angeles mansion. Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda responded to the alert and arrived at the home in Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard to find the 50-year-old singer collapsed and not breathing. He had suffered a cardiac arrest. He was later pronounced dead that afternoon.

His death comes barely a month before his scheduled come back concertswhich were supposed to be his last. The star announced this a few months before his death saying “These will be my final show performances in London. This is it. When I say this is it, this is it.”

Fans gathered in different places around the country, singing some of his songs.

Despite his eccentric lifestyle and the controversies that surrounded him later on in life, the impact of Jackson on the music industry and on his fans cannot be ignored.

We asked our facebook fans to share their favorite music and memories and here is what some of them had to say.

“We-eh! this is just terrible news. i always thought Michael was immortal. my favourite Michael song? no contest: smooth criminal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex30DYwQlHU

that is one of the most stylish videos ever. MJ was a genius! may he make the best music with the angels and rest with his ancestors.” – Ngum Ngafor

“Sad sad day for music! Difficult choice as there are a couple of favorites! Given the circumstances, I’d like to say ‘Gone too soon’ but my all time favorites are ‘Remember the time’, ‘Heal the World’ & ‘Man in the Mirror’
His ‘Thriller’ video is groundbreaking & definitely out of this world!!! He rests!!!” – Fen Ngu

“I just love ”heal the world” that song will always remain in my heart. Michael was a great Hero, he thought us how to break,” oh what a world”an empty one at that. Adieu Michael” – Lilian Ebonge Ebango

“My favorite song of Michael is Black and White. This song made me look at Michael as a reformer trying to bring unity among race.I will miss you.May your soul rest in peace.” Atem Isabel

“Well detailed and updated research from authentic sources, tell me that your color change related surgeries are the sole if not major cause of your latter health deterioration. It is a sad thing that others who today have died (in all domains thinkable), would be considered martyrs, but you, though King of pop, would be considered a victim of racial complex! Well ”good” thing the ”fallen” part of your awesome career came when you changed to become ”white”. No offense to the white race, I am not trying to sound racial, but it is as to say, that change was the BIG mistake! You have marked so many, in and out of the music industry. My fav songs (He is a Legend there has got to be more than 1!) are: ”Smooth Criminal”, ”The Girl Is Mine” and ”Speechless”. RIP” – Kenji Mbako

“I pinched myself yesterday, thinking I was dreaming it all. I just want it not to be true. For me the list is endless, but my fav of all is ‘Do you remember the time, that we fell in love’. We will miss you MJ,but you will live in us through your music. Adieu!!” – Pamela Macaulay

DISCUSSION: Are adoption laws in Malawi unreasonable? Is Mercy’s father ungrateful to Madonna for wanting to raise his child?

June 16, 2009 by Dtiyah · 2 Comments

Pop Singer Madonna, who adopted a son from Malawi in 2006 has been given the right to adopt a second Malawian child by a Malawi appeals court.

Normally, an adoptive parent has to live in Malawi for 18 months before being awarded a child for adoption there, assuming all else is in place.

The Nyasa Times reports from Blantyre that the Supreme Court of Appeal in Malawi handed down a ruling Friday which overturned a lower court decision preventing Madonna from adopting three-year-old Chifundo (“Mercy”) James from an orphanage in southern Malawi.

In April Judge Esmie Chombo said the pop star could not be granted custody because she was single and she had not lived in the country for the minimum period prescribed by inter-country adoption laws.

The little girl’s father, who placed his daughter in an orphanage because he cannot afford to care for her is devastated that Madonna is able to adopt his daughter and take her out of the country according to the Daily Mirror, a British newspaper.

Mercy’s dad, James Kambewa is quoted as saying, “I am devastated. I did not even know that the judges were making a ruling about Madonna adopting my child on that day…I feel betrayed by my countrymen who gave me a deaf ear because I am poor and Madonna is rich.”

The Talented Sharon Rose Revealed!

June 16, 2009 by belleniba · 2 Comments

sharonrose_story

If you have never heard of her, soon you will. Her song L.O.V.E will have you tapping your feet, moving your head and jumping off your seat to move to the beat. She is the new kid on the block and her talent is unquestionable. The 19 year old singer has shared the stage with the likes of General Levy and Jahaziel and she is called Sharon Rose.

Sharon Rose was born in Zimbabwe and moved to the UK when she was 9 years old. She is unafraid to get up on that stage and do her thing. I caught up with the budding star as she prepares to release her new single L.O.V.E next month for an interview.

Belle Niba: How did you start out in the music business?

Sharon Rose: Well, I woke up one beautiful morning during the summer and I said to my brother “I want to do an album and can you make some music for me please” and after a month and a half, we had written, produced and recorded the album and were preparing for the show which was going to be a few weeks after we had finished recording!

Belle Niba: Looks like you have been working hard. What has the journey been like in creating your own single?

Sharon Rose: It’s been like MAD hard work, but that’s a good thing! Its been exciting and eye opening!!!

Belle Niba: Which artists have inspired your album and career?

Sharon Rose: On my first album, I have to say that my inspiration came from people like Jill Scott and Beyonce …but I was still trying to discover myself and what I was good at. For this album, names like Coldplay, Robyn, Gwen Stefani, Miley Cyrus, Lauryn Hill, CeCe Winans, Pink and Jill scott pop up! Its crazy! Lol

Belle Niba: Who writes your songs?

Sharon Rose: My brother and I wrote the songs for the first album, but for this one, I’m taking the lead for a bit…showing my skills, but its not completed yet, so you never know!

Belle Niba: Why did you choose to sing about Love in your first single?

Sharon Rose: Because I wanted to (lol)! Nah but seriously, I love Love…so I thought it only right to write about it! Also because it’s a quirky subject and it’s almost summertime and people like that sort of stuff at this time of year!

Belle Niba: How has life changed since you became an artist?

Sharon Rose: When I became an artist, I thought it was going to be a fun and easy ride! But I realized really quickly that there is a lot of work to be done and that I had to get up off my butt and grind! Some of the challenges have been the traveling thing and keeping up with the business side of things-learning to be patient and working with people who are less than patient! But I realized that every second I waste getting worried about something stupid, someone else is getting on with work that I should be getting on with, or someone else is earning money I should be earning, so I try by all means not to worry!

Belle Niba: Have you gone through moments when you doubt yourself?

Sharon Rose: I definitely have been through those moments and it is mostly when I see someone who I think is better than me at singing or performing but then I realize that there is NO ONE in this world that can do what I can do so I quickly snap back and do my thing!!!!

Belle Niba: I hope you all stop by her website at http://www.sharonrosemusic.com and show her some L.O.V.E
